Yoga increases flexibility, stamina and improves posture. Most people find increased levels of energy and an enhanced feeling of well-being. Wear leggings or shorts and a t-shirt. Baggy trousers are not suitable, nor leggings that cover the ankles or obstruct the feet. Yoga is practiced in bare feet and socks cannot be worn. It’s important for me to be able to see how your legs and feet are working.
The yoga poses are demonstrated and explained to you by the teacher and specific instructions are given to help you achieve the correct pose to the best of your ability. Sometimes props (wooden/foam blocks, belts or blankets) are introduced to help you achieve this. Iyengar teachers are trained specifically to observe and ensure that you are moving safely and correctly.
Iyengar yoga is for everyone. We are keen to encourage men to come and take part.
The Yoga Asanas (exercises) get rid of built up tensions in the body through sustained stretches. After completing the main part of the class you will find yourself in the right frame of mind and body to enjoy relaxation.
Do not start yoga during the first 13 weeks of your pregnancy. You should only do Iyengar yoga during your pregnancy if you were attending class before you became pregnant.
Do not eat anything substantial for a couple of hours before the class. Remember to mention if you have injuries or medical conditions.
If you are unable to make your regular class for whatever reason, there may be an opportunity to attend another class WITHIN THE SAME BLOCK providing there is a space available. Currently we run classes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings. This should provide some extra flexibility if you have to miss your class.
… and this is what some of our students have to say
"I started yoga after suffering from severe back pain for months after having my daughter by Caesarean section. Yoga has been like a breath of fresh air into my life and I feel so much better when I do it. I no longer suffer the pain I did and I now feel I'm reaping the rewards of regular practice. I was extremely overweight when I started out on my yoga journey and it has been a factor in encouraging me to make huge differences to my lifestyle and outlook on life. I cannot recommend Iyengar Yoga enough and Maureen as a teacher. She adapts the moves to suit your specific needs and any ailments. Don't think that that you are too old, infirm or overweight to give it a go. I did it and love it!" Lindsey Ellis
"Being a relatively active person I’d thought what exercise could I do that wasn’t ‘cardio’ based and for many years I’d thought about trying yoga, mainly so I’d continue to get up in the morning with a spring in my step. Then one day I thought “I must get a yoga class sorted” and fortunately for me, just round the corner in Lees, “YogaYourself” had arrived. So after six weeks’ worth of lessons I can say I’m really enjoying it. It’s not hard, it’s not easy, it’s just right….you know it’s doing something good for you and I’m now looking forward to how I will feel in a year’s time." Paul Grant
"I have practiced yoga for over a year now and I absolutely love it! I started after many attempts at keeping fit after suffering numerous injuries from a car accident. I have a very bad back, a not too clever neck and a very well put together leg after three surgical procedures.... I'm hardly Quasimodo but I do have to be very careful with the exercise I do.
My first day was very nerve wracking, taking the step of being the new girl, looking silly, being the wrong build, wearing the wrong clothes etc.... I couldn't of been more wrong! Our classes are wonderful. Everybody is friendly and happy. We are all shapes and sizes both women and men and we all just fit!
Maureen creates a fantastic atmosphere where everybody works to their own ability. She can be at the other side of the room and will know which part of me is hurting as I'm doing the pose ever so slightly wrong... But she knows! And through her help and expertise I'm getting there, my confidence is growing and I'm starting to feel less immobile in my every day activities. I'm learning to be less stressed and deal with every day ups and downs in a more effective way and finally starting to understand my own body.
If you fancy a challenge, a way to de stress and relax and most of all a way to stay flexible and strong then I would highly recommend yoga with Maureen.... It's the best decision I ever made!" Sarah Westwood
"Being a teacher, I have a very busy daily routine. Attending Yoga is 'me time'. 90 minutes to be quiet, stretch out and forget the stress of the day." Jessica Lynch
"I started yoga with Maureen after having my first baby as I thought it would get me back into exercise. And that's exactly what it did! I couldn't believe how much I felt like I'd had a 'work-out' at the end of my first class. It did and has done ever since provided me with time out, the feeling of working towards fitness and toning and learning how to switch off from everyday stresses. I walk away energised every week. Maureen is a great teacher and after just a few months I feel part of the Yoga Yourself family." Jenny Bates
"Yoga is a wonderful way of working as an individual with your mind and body. It fully engages the brain whilst exploring just what is physically possible, leading to a greater awareness of the whole self. For me, this can only be realised in a disciplined, but comfortable and safe environment, under the instruction of a sensitive, caring and very competent teacher. That's why I will continue to come to Maureen's classes for as long as she'll have me." Kate England
